James was born about 1854 in Sancreed, Cornwall.1   James' father was William STEER and his mother was Alice Strick.  His maternal grandfather is <Unknown> and his maternal grandmother was Alice STRICK. He had a brother and three sisters, named William H, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Mary A.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
