Thomas was born about 1836 in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.1   Thomas' father was Thomas STEARS and his mother was Caroline STEARS. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, Daniel, Moriah, Matilda and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the six children.
