Mary Ann was born about 1844 in Wortley, Yorkshire.1   Mary Ann's father was Samuel STEAR and her mother was Hannah STEAR.  Her maternal grandfather was Joseph ASKHAM and her maternal grandmother is <Unknown>. She had a brother and two sisters, named James, Elizabeth and Rebecca.  She was the second oldest of the four children.
