John was born about 1849 in Liskeard, Cornwall.1   John's father was Richard STEAR and his mother was Jemima STEAR.  His maternal grandfather is <Unknown> and his maternal grandmother was Jemima SANDOW. He had a brother and two sisters, named Richard, Jemima and Elizabeth Ann.  He was the youngest of the four children.
