William was born in 1824 in Lingfield Surrey. William's father was Robert RIDLEY and his mother was Elizabeth STEER.  His maternal grandparents were George STEER and Mary MITCHELL. He had a brother and three sisters, named James, Mary, Elizabeth and Emily.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
