George was born about 1881 in Guildford Surrey.1   George's father was William BACKHURST and his mother was Mary BACKHURST.  His maternal grandfather was Francis STEER and his maternal grandmother is <Unknown>. He had two brothers and a sister, named Francis Richard, Fred and Annie Harriet.  He was the youngest of the four children.
