Alfred was born in 1852 in Stockton on Tees.1  Alfred's father was Richard Rollisson and his mother was Sophia Marshall Hemingway.  His paternal grandparents were William Rollisson and Mary Pickersgill. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, Fred., Ellen, Ann and Jennet.  He was the oldest of the six children.
