Barbara's father was Sir Thomas Bradford and her mother was Mary Ann. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Bradford and Elizabeth Otter. She was the youngest of four children. She had two brothers and a sister, named James, Ralph and Frederica. She had two half-sisters named Mary and Elizabeth.
