George was born in 1895 in Salford.1   George's father was George Jos. Cowell and his mother was Minerva Walker.  His paternal grandparents were George Joseph Cowell and Lucy Conoly Walker.  Richard Walker and Elizabeth were his grandparents through his mother's adoption. He had a sister named Beatrice.  He was the younger of the two children.
