Bertha was born in 1876 in Salford.1  Bertha's father was George Joseph Cowell and her mother was Lucy Conoly Walker.  Her paternal grandparents were George Moulting Cowell and Ann; her maternal grandparents were Charles Walker and Ellen Connolly. She had three brothers and four sisters, named George, Frederick, William, Ellen, Annie, Lucy and Margaret.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
