Johan Andreas was born on July 15th, 1821 in Gouritsrivier, George and his baptism took place on October 14th, 1821 in George.1   Johan Andreas' father was Cornelis (Langetouw) Claasen and his mother was Johanna Isabella Rautenbach.  His paternal grandparents were Nicolaas Claasen and Martha Dorothea Pienaar. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Nicolaas Petrus, Cornelis Johannes, Daniel Gerhardus, Margaretha Isabella, Maria Dorothea and Johanna.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
