Edward was born in St Augustines Orphanage, Geelong. Edward's father was Lorenzo Teresio DELLALA and his mother was Henrietta JOHNSTON.  His paternal grandparents were Fiorenzo Federico DELLALA and Margherita SALA; his maternal grandparents were Walter JOHNSTON and Mary Jane PADFIELD. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Fiorenzo Federico, Lorenzo Enrico, Dante Angelo, Allesandro Annibal, Robert Augustine, Prosperina Cleopatra, Matilde Paolina, Henrietta and Georgina Antonia Bianca. He had a half-brother named Royalston Arthur.
