Hector was the fourth child and elder of twin sons of native-born parents John Horatio Clayton, solicitor, and his wife Isabella, née Woodward.

Lieutenant Hector Joseph Richard Clayton (wounded) is the son of Mr J.H. Clayton, president of the New South Wales Cricket Association, and vice-president of the Rugby Union."

"MEN OF THE DARDANELLES.
LIEUT. CLAYTON.
Lieutenant Hector Joseph Richard Clayton, who is reported wounded, was born In 1885, and received his first commission as second- lieutenant in the 26th Australian Infantry Regiment in 1913, and was attached to the Red- fern Company. He was a member of the Sydney University Rugby Football Club, and noted as a fine forward. He retired from the game early, however, owing to an injured knee. His father, Mr. J. H. Clayton, is president of the New South Wales Cricket Association and a vice-president of the Rugby Union. Lieutenant Clayton left with the 4th Battalion, under the command of the late Lieutenant-Colonel A. J. Onslow Thompson. "

"Major Hector Joseph Richard Clayton, son of Mr. John H. Clayton, City Bank Chambers, city, and president of the Cricket Association, was mentioned in Sir Douglas Halg's despatch of April 9. Both Major Hector Clayton and his brother, Dr. Harry J. Clayton, enlisted at the commencement of the war, and were at the landing on Gallipoli. After serving for 18 months, Dr. Harry Clayton, who also held the rank of major, returned to Sydney, and is now Superintendent of Prince Alfred Hos- pital, whilst Major Hector Clayton is com- manding officer of the 4th Australian Divisional Base Depot in France."
In WW1 he was in the 4th Battalion AIF 1st Inf. Bgde. - Received a Shell wound to his right knee on the 22-April-1915 in the Dardenelles.
He was mentioned in despatches by Sir D Haig on the 09-April-1917.
WW2 Service No. N60157 and promoted to Colonel.
