Nis was born on June 29th, 1826 in Rosgaard, Denmark.  Nis' father was Peter Asmussen and his mother was <Unknown>.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Asmussen and Anna Margaretha Jacobensen. He had two brothers and a sister, named Hans, Asmus and Anna.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Peter, Claus, Asmus, Anna and Henning.
