Samuel's father was Thomas Wood and his mother was Hannah Gill. He had a brother named Daniel.  He was the older of the two children.

‌Samuel and Martha were married in a religious ceremony on March 24th, 1845 in Almondbury by Vicar Lewis Jones and witnessed by Joshua Nobel & James Garner.²
