Ellen, known as Emma, was born on January 25th, 1861 in Slaithwaite and her baptism took place there on July 28th, 1861.1  Emma's father was Ephraim Wood and her mother was Mary Riley. She had seven brothers and a sister, named Joseph, John, Thomas, William, Truth, Herbert, Riley and Sarah.  She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
