John was born in 1826 and his christening took place on May 21st, 1826 in Witton.1  John's father was John Winstanley and his mother was Martha Plumb. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, George, Elizabeth, Susan and Martha.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
