Edward's father was Daniel Williams and his mother was Phoebe Diggle. He had a sister named Phebe.  He was the younger of the two children. He had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Robert, James, Daniel, Thomas, Abraham and Sarah.  He died at the age of 34 in March 1870 in Bolton.²
