Martha was born in December 1886 in Liverpool.1  Martha's father was Carl (John Charles) Westphal and her mother was Elizabeth Calvin. She had a brother and three sisters, named John, Mary, Ann and Margaret.  She was the youngest of the five children.

‌Martha and Robert were married in a religious ceremony in December 1909 in Liverpool.2
