John was born on April 7th, 1783 in Chowbent and his baptism took place on May 6th, 1783 at Newbent Chapel (Presbyterian). John's father was John Sudlow and his mother was Ann Tomlinson. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas and Molly.  He was the youngest of the three children.
