Sarah's father was Thomas Roberts and her mother was Elizabeth Roberts. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Rowland, Edward, Mary and Elizabeth. She was the youngest of the six children.

- Sarah was loose to Roger and Mary, living with then in 1901. She was left almost £4000 by her sister Mary Brereton in 1940.
