Miles was born in 1814 in Bolton and his christening took place on July 31st, 1814 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Miles' father was Richard Pollitt and his mother was Mary Davenport. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Richard, William, Louisa, Mary and Anna.  He was the third oldest of the six known children.
