Mary's father was Joseph Pickles and her mother was Hannah Bolton.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Pickles and Mary Walsh. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, Sarah and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the five children. She had three half-brothers named John, James and Joseph.
