James was born in 1751 in Downham and his baptism took place on July 14th, 1751 at St. Leonard (Downham).1  James' father was Michael Pickles and his mother was Margaret. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Alice and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
