Alfred, known as Jim, was born on September 29th, 1877 in Birkenhead.¹

Jim's father was John William Nugent and his mother was Margaret Jane Cairns. His paternal grandparents were John Nugent and Margaret Waddell. He had four brothers named William, Arthur, Frank and Richard. He was the youngest of the five children. He died at the age of 65 on March 5th, 1943 in Birkenhead. His burial was on March 9th, 1943 at the Flaybrick Memorial Gardens.¹²

- In 1911, James (i.e. Jim) and Mary (33 & 32) had been married 7 years and had two children; William Joseph (5) and Marjorie (2). They were recorded in Joseph Mather's census return at 264 St Ann's Street, Birkenhead and then crossed out (because Jim had done his own census return).

- From before 1911 to after 1911 Jim's occupation was Dock Labourer full time in transportation for Mersey Docks, in Birkenhead.
