Nelson was born in 1908. Nelson's father was Collingwood North and his mother was Emma Crow. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Crow and Martha Ellen Seymour. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Winifred, William, Frank, Clara and Annie. He was the second youngest of the six children.
