James was born in December 1868 in Rochdale.1  James' father was Charles Frederick Mathers and his mother was Sarah Ann Broughton.  His paternal grandparents were James Mathers and Mary Ann Harding(?).  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 1 in July 1870 in Rochdale.2
