James was born in March 1812 in Bolton and his baptism took place on March 22nd, 1812 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  James' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Mary Barret. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Mary and Mary.  He was the youngest of the four children.
