Mary's father was William Knowles and her mother was Betty Entwistle. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Richard, Joseph, Rachel and Sarah.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  She died at the age of 72 in December 1881 in Turton.  She was buried on December 17th, 1881 at St. Anne (Turton).²
