James was born in 1787 in Haslingden and his baptism took place there on March 21st, 1787.1  James' father was Dionysius (Dennis) Howarth and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Crook.  His paternal grandparents were John Howarth and Silence  Duckworth. He had two brothers and five sisters, named John, Henry, Sally, Silence, Betty, Jane and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
