William was born on January 13th, 1890 in Westhoughton and his baptism took place on March 5th, 1890 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1 2  William's father was Richard Heaton and his mother was Jane Clegg. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Richard, James, Lily and Bella.  He was the second youngest of the five known children.
