John's father was Herbert Dwyer and his mother was Elsie Parrott. He had a brother and four sisters, named Herbert, Ena, Ivy, Elsie and Hilda.  He was the youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 27 in December 1966 in Birkenhead.²
