Henrich, known as Henry, was born in 1834 in Hannover.1  Henry's father was Claus Dittmer and his mother was Hibbel Gerken. He had a brother and four sisters, named Cord, Anna, Gretle, Catharina and Catharina.  He was the third oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother named Claus.

‌Henry and Ann were married in a religious ceremony on February 26th, 1860 at St. Ann (Liverpool) by William Whaler.2
