Jonathan was born on September 5th, 1821 in Turton and his baptism took place on September 5th, 1821 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Jonathan's father was Thomas Dewhurst and his mother was Esther Holt.  His maternal grandparents were John Holt and Ann Crook. He had four brothers named William, Thomas, James and Andrew.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
