James was born on August 15th, 1681 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on August 18th, 1681 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  James' father was John Crook and his mother was Esther Thornley. He had a brother and a sister, named Samuel and Susannah.  He was the youngest of the three children.
