Joseph was born in October 1815 in Brereton cum Smethwick and his baptism took place there on October 21st, 1815.1  Joseph's father was Thomas Bolshaw and his mother was Mary Clayton. He had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William and Emma.  William and Joseph were twins.
