William's father was Charles Batho and his mother was Emma Sudlow.  His paternal grandparents were George Batho and Martha Cartwright. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Charles, George, Martha and Mary. He had a half-brother named John.  He died as an infant at the age of 1 in December 1874 in Malpas.²
