Charles of's father is Lothair I Louis I and his mother is Irmengard daughter Hugh II. His paternal grandparents are Louis I Charlemagne and Ermengarde of Ingerman; his maternal grandparents are Hugh II Luitfrid II and Aba. He is the second of five children. He has two brothers and two sisters, named Louis II, Lothar II, Ermengarde daughter and Bertha daughter.
