Benson was born in 1832. Benson's father was Elijah Petty Dye and his mother was Mahala Thorn. His paternal grandparents were Vincent Dye and Elizabeth Petty. He had three brothers named Alfred, Harrison and Henry. He was the oldest of the four children.
