Disaway was born in 1837. Disaway's father was Thomas Horner Cain and his mother was Elizabeth Dye. His maternal grandparents were Vincent Dye and Elizabeth Petty. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Elijah, Thomas, Samuel, Alfred, Cornelius, Delilah, Mary, Elizabeth and Susan. He was the oldest of the ten children.
