Mathias was born on January 26th, 1631 in Heusden Zolder.1   Mathias' father was Antonius Gaethofs and his mother was Elisabeth Aerts.  His paternal grandparents were Bartholomeus Gaethofs and Maria Beelen; his maternal grandparents were Petrus Arts and Margaretha Hamel. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Bartholomeus, Petrus, Jacob, Bartholomy, Antonius, Margareta, Maria, Margareta and Maria.
