Cornelius was born on March 6th, 1892 in Luik.¹ Cornelius' father was Henricus Gaethofs and his mother was Maria Catherina Paesen. His paternal grandparents were Augustinus Gerardus Augustus Gaethofs and Anna Catherina Bussé; his maternal grandparents were Joannes Matheus Paesen and Dymphna Elisabeth Vliegen. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Stafke, Pieter, Martinus, Jean Martin Joseph, Jaak, Jozef, SN and Maria Catharina Jacqueline. He died at the age of 93 on June 12th, 1985 in Neerpelt.²

‌Cornelius and Anna were married in a religious & civil ceremony on December 19th, 1919 in Bocholt.¹ They had five sons and two daughters, named Henricus, Gust, Pieter Joannes, Martinus, Jacobus, Thoke and Cecilia.
