Carolus, known as Charles, was born on December 5th, 1767 in Lummen Genebosch and his baptism took place on December 6th, 1767 in Lummen.1 2   Charles' father was Petrus (Pierre) Gaethofs and his mother was Maria Schaenen (Schraenen).  His paternal grandparents were Petrus Henricus Gaethofs and Elisabetha Daniels. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Joannes, Paulus, Bruno, Joannes Michaël, Joannes Michaël, Henricus, Maria Christina, Ane Elisabeth, Anna Catharina, Anna Maria and Maria-Theresia.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.

‌Charles and Elisabeth were married in a religious ceremony on May 5th, 1804 in Lummen witnessed by Bruno Gaethofs.2   They had a son and a daughter, named Alexander and Maria Josephina.
