Barthus was born on June 22nd, 1593 in Heusden.¹   Barthus' father was Bartholomeus Gaethofs and his mother was Maria Beelen.  His paternal grandparents were Bartholomeus Gaethofs and Catherina. He had four brothers and a sister, named Bartolomeus, Joes, Antonius, Cornelius and Catharina.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
