His paternal grandparents were Jean Nicolas Elens and Hélène Dorlinx. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Jean François, Egidius Franciscus Josephus, Marie Elisabeth, Maria Elisabeta Margareta, Marie-Agnès-Josèpha and Catherine Elisabeth Josepha . He was the second oldest of the seven children.-
