John was born in 1842 in Tintern.  John's father was James Rogers and his mother was Charlotte Cole.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Rogers and Sarah; his maternal grandparents were Phillip Cole and Elizabeth. He had two brothers and three sisters, named George, Alfred, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
