Florence was born in 1878.  Florence's father was James Riggens Van Winkle and her mother was Mary Elizabeth Bicknell.  Her maternal grandparents were Sylvester W. Bicknell and Nancy Rose Bicknell.  She was the second of five children.  She had two brothers and two sisters, named Lewis W., Wilson S., Martha Mattie Ellen and Ellen Margaret.
