Viola's father was Thomas R. Purvis and her mother was Sarah Abney.  Her paternal grandparents were H. James Purvis and Nancy Elizabeth Azbill.  She is the fourth of seven children.  She has two brothers and four sisters, named Raphael, John, Fairy, Laura, Joyce and Lucille.
