John's father was Thomas R. Purvis and his mother was Sarah Abney.  His paternal grandparents were H. James Purvis and Nancy Elizabeth Azbill.  He is the fifth of seven children.  He has a brother and five sisters, named Raphael, Fairy, Laura, Viola, Joyce and Lucille.
