Mary was born in 1824.  Mary's father was William Jackson and her mother was Sarah Sally McSwain.  Her paternal grandparents were John Jackson Jr. and Mary Forest Hancock.  She was the fourth of nine children.  She had four brothers and four sisters, named Howard, Oliver Perry, Isaac Franklin, David, Elizabeth, Nancy J., Susan and Hannah Margaret.
